SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Engineer's function is to create mechanical and opto-mechanical system layouts and designs of high complexity.  Will also perform conceptual design work and may be asked to perform the function of team leader.  Reviews customer requirements to propose and implement design based solutions to meet specific application needs.  Experience in the application and use of sophisticated analytical techniques and tools is a requirement of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Must be a self-starter, capable of developing innovative, original and efficient design concepts for mechanical and opto-mechanical systems, subsystems, and instruments that function in commercial, military and space environments.

·         Determine and document design tradeoffs and sensitivities of performance to cost, mass, risk, and manufacturability.

·         Perform design, development, and modification of mechanical components, products, and systems using current release 3-D solid modeling software (e.g. SolidWorks) and other design software.

·         Generate drawings from which components and/or complete systems can be manufactured.  This includes both individual component drawings as well as sub and top level assembly drawings.  In-depth understanding and ability to accurately apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing is required.

·         Participate in concurrent engineering efforts, fully involving manufacturing and test in design decisions.  Take responsibility for the technical and cost effectiveness of the opto-mechanical portion of the product as it relates to the costs for design, manufacture, test, and use.

·         Participate in quoting work related to opto-mechanical design.  This includes the ability to write convincing technical proposal sections related to opto-mechanical design.

·         Analyze components and assemblies using Finite Element Analyses for stress, dynamic response, and thermal influences.  Generate reports based on results.

·         At least five years experience performing hands-on mechanical engineering with an emphasis on design of precision mechanisms, optical assemblies and space optical systems.

·         Knowledge of various methods of lens mounting and design of optical alignment fixtures. Experience in packaging of optics, opto-mechanical and electro-optic subsystems.

·         Expertise in 3D solid modeling software, with recent knowledge of SolidWorks being preferred.

·         Experience and expertise in using Finite Element Analyses to analyze parts and assemblies for loading stress, dynamic response, and thermal influences.  Familiarity with CosmosWorks is favorable.

·         Self-starter, capable of developing innovative, original and efficient design concepts for opto-mechanical systems, subsystems, or instruments that function in military or commercial environments.

·         Evidence of significant customer interface.

·         Must be a “Go To” person.

·         Using a solid depth of knowledge over a broad field, brainstorm with other technical personnel to exchange ideas and discuss creative options to highly complex problems.
