MANAGER OF ENGINEERING

 

SUMMARY:

 

The position of Manager of Engineering combines the experience and personal skills required to be an effective and supportive manager of a staff of highly talented engineers with hands-on engineering experience in one or more of the core technologies of LightWorks Optics.  The current need is for an experienced engineering manager possessing opto-mechanical design and engineering skills to the level of senior or principal mechanical engineer.   Engineering talents in other core areas (such as optical engineering and/or optical design) will also be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Managerial Responsibilities:

The position of Manager of Engineering will direct and coordinate the activities of the Engineering Department of LightWorks Optics (LWO), which supports all of the company’s engineering requirements.  Responsibilities will include:

·        Maintain the technical capability of the Engineering Department at state-of-the-art by providing a staff with the necessary skills and capabilities to support customer and company needs. 

·        Maintain a level of corporate knowledge to maintain LWO’s technical competence at state-of-the-art while remaining cost competitive and providing growth to meet company goals.

·        Provide technical guidance, training and motivation to engineering staff.  Cultivate an open, supportive and team-oriented environment.

·        Provide technical support to Business Development/Marketing, Program Management, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance/Test. 

·        In support of the Business Development/Marketing Department, provide technical support to the preparation of “winning” proposals.

·        Provide effective technical liaison with customers.

·        Direct the design of technically sound, cost competitive new products.

·        Maintain control over schedules and over both project and overhead budgets by providing an effective planning and review capability.

·        Continue to learn and remain current in new technology and practices of mechanical and optical engineering.

 

Technical Responsibilities

The Manager of Engineering must also possess a high level of technical competence (at a principal or senior level) in either mechanical or optical engineering.  Due to current technical needs, the preferred hands-on technical capability for this position would be in opto-mechanical design and engineering.  The responsibilities of this portion of this position would be:

·        Responsible for creating the mechanical designs for complex and innovative state-of-the-art optical and opto-mechanical components, systems and subsystems, primarily for use in aerospace applications in military aircraft and space environments.

 

·        Responsible for analyzing the overall requirements of assigned projects to determine the primary technical principles, risks and difficulties involved and then to communicate these plans can be created to accomplish the project on time.

·        Responsible for taking the lead role in assigned projects – defining overall design philosophy, evaluating detailed designs for completeness and correctness, directing and performing system analyses, and overseeing breadboarding and testing activities.

·        Responsible for conceptual design, development and modification of mechanical components, products, and systems using current release 3-D solid modeling software (e.g. SolidWorks) and other design software.  Hands-on mechanical design will require the use of SolidWorks and CosmosWorks.

·         Responsible for the creation of complete and detailed technical reports, presentations, and technical proposals and then orally presenting this information during formal reviews – often with the customer present.

·         Generate detailed drawings from which components and/or complete systems can be manufactured.  This would include both individual and complete drawing packages. 

·         Perform design layouts and studies.  Detail parts drawings.

·         Maintain documentation to meet ISO 9001:2000 requirements.

·         Responsible for mentoring and training of LWO Senior Mechanical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and Designers, including identification of areas for improvement, improvement objectives, improvement plans and regular assessments of mentoring/training effectiveness.

 

REQUIRED:

·        To perform effectively in this position typically requires a minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or optical engineering plus a B.S. or equivalent in business administration or management.

·        At least ten years experience in precision opto-mechanical or optical engineering, with at least five years in a management capacity.

·        Must possess strong leadership abilities, good human relations skills, be a team player and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·        Provide technical support to respond to customer imposed deadlines for rapid submission of technical proposals or design of new products which pose constantly changing staffing requirements.

·        Maintain cost and schedule control, particularly on fixed price contracts.

·        Due to technology requirements, may be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information (U. S. citizenship required).

 

 

PREFERRED:

For mechanical engineering, the following is preferred:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • At least 15 years of aerospace, space or military mechanical engineering experience performing hands-on mechanical engineering with an emphasis on design of precision mechanisms, optical assemblies and space optical systems.
  • Knowledge of various methods of lens mounting and design of optical alignment fixtures.  Experience in packaging of optics, opto-mechanical and electro-optic subsystems.
  • Expertise in 3D solid modeling and knowledge of SolidWorks (preferred) or Pro-E.
  • Self-starter, capable of developing innovative, original and efficient design concepts for opto-mechanical systems, subsystems, or instruments that function in military or commercial environments.
  • Experience in managing large, multi-discipline projects.
  • Diverse and complete past experience in the design of complex optical and opto-mechanical systems and subsystems in an aerospace environment.
  • Proficiency in Windows NT.
